***The history of Sam's guesthouse*** The history of Sam's guesthouse has an intriguing if a bit unusual background, which involves business practices, historical intrigues and the role of particular women in traditional China. During the Ming dynasty some 400 years ago various salt dealers and merchants from Shannxi province sought to expand their business, in particular in searching for a place where 'beautiful'women and location would be pleasing to the Chengdu Governor who in turn would then be beholden to the salt dealers sought to expand their business. After considerable search a place was found which met the fengshui requirements. Three years passed before the building was a finished, 'good-looking'woman recruited and suitable business arrangements completed. After the death of the Governor the original building became a business center attracting merchants thorughout China. Over the years various prominent personalities stayed here, including the Dalai Lama. Today Sam's guesthouse offers an island of tranquility in a city that is undergoing constant development. It's location, serenity, and spacious courtyard, ancient structure and traditional atmosphere is attractive to foreign guests, backpackers included, and Chinese travelers, the mansion gives guests a moment to appreciate a bit of old chinese culture away from the hectic lifestyle of modern Chengdu.
My stay at Sam's I booked on line and was not sure what to expect. The place was fantastic - the stasff very good. We arrived at 11 pm at night so they were there waiting for us. Even rang in the afternoon to confirm my booking. I booked a 3 bedroom ensuite. It was spacious, clean and very nice for the price. We ate breakfast there, organised a fantastic massage and cupping from them and had dr4inks on the verandah overlooking very relaxing gardens. I loved the chinese look and feel about the place, but was comfortable and safe. Definitely recommend it and stay there again.
